The Plague Column

The plague mark on Main Square in Maribor was erected in gratitude for the end of the plague, which claimed the lives of a third of the population in the 17th century. In 1681 a pillar bearing the image of Mary of the Assumption wearing a wreath of twelve stars and a moon under her feet was erected. Today’s monument is a replica as the original statue was replaced during the restoration in 1990 and were moved to a storage facility.
